Men's tennis struggles against Los Angeles schools at home

Southern California and UCLA have been a thorn in the side of all UA sports lately.

Freshman Colin O'Grady returns a serve Friday against Southern California. The Wildcats lost a pair of weekend matches against USC and UCLA.

The basketball team was swept by the Los Angeles schools last week, and the women's tennis team, also lost to both over the weekend.

You can now add the Arizona men's tennis team to the club as the Wildcats were swept by the Bruins and Trojans this weekend.

USC came to Tucson as the No. 4 team in the nation, but that did not intimidate Arizona as it fought hard, yet eventually fell to the Trojans 3-4.

So far this season, the Wildcats have been inconsistent in doubles play, but they have been able to overcome losing the early doubles point.

However, it finally caught up to UA as the doubles point turned out to be the deciding factor against the Trojans.

After a tough loss against the Trojans, Arizona was unable to bounce back and upset No. 5 UCLA.

UA fell to the Bruins 1-6.

The only bright spot for the Wildcats against the Bruins was the play of UA's top player Steven Capriati, who upset Tobias Clemens, the No. 9 player in the nation, 6-2, 7-5.

Capriati's upset victory was the second of the weekend as he defeated USC's top player, Andrew Park, who is also ranked in the Top 20.

"Steven was wonderful this weekend," UA head coach Bill Wright said. "Both players are in the top 15. He just played great both days."

Sophomore Whi Kim entered Saturday's match with a career 19-0 record at home, but that was snapped as he lost a hard-fought match to Jean-Julien Rojer 4-6, 6-7.

"He had a great run going," Arizona assistant coach Bob Helmig said. "If it isn't a record, then it is definitely close to one."

UA (4-3, 0-2 Pacific 10 Conference) has now lost three consecutive matches, but Wright said he was pleased to see the way Arizona continued to fight until the very end.

"It is like in basketball," Wright said. "If you make the last shot, you win, and if you don't, you lose. We had that chance this weekend against USC and we missed. We have to keep working hard so that doesn't happen again."
