After four strenuous weeks on the road, UA coaches Dave Murray and Fred Harvey have decided not to send anyone to Iowa to compete in the Last Chance meet.
Scheduled for today, the meet serves as the final opportunity to get athletes qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships two weeks from now.
"We feel the people who are already qualified are secure, and we'd like to give our bodies time to recover," Harvey said. "We usually like to let our players rest the week before the championships."
Although people like seniors Brianna Glenn, Mike Kenyon and Tara Chaplin have already qualified for the NCAA Championships, the season still continues for the rest of the squad.
Tomorrow, the Wildcats will sprint up the road to Tempe where Arizona State will play host to the Bill Sawyer Invitational.
The Wildcat women will be the only ranked team in the competition, coming in at No. 5, in the latest Trackwire 25 poll.
Also tomorrow, Arizona will compete in its first outdoor event of the season.
"It gives a number of people a chance to run and see where they're at in terms of outdoor events," Harvey said.
Murray considers this a very low-key meet. "It's a good way to get the outdoor season started and it gives people a chance to compete outdoors," he said. "It also allows people to compete who haven't competed in the past few weeks."
The Wildcats are also inching closer to their home opener, which will be held March 15-16. The Willie Williams Invitational is the first of two straight home meets, the other being the Jim Click Shootout on March 23.
After an impressive showing at last week's Mountain Pacific Conference Championships, Murray and company look forward to carrying that momentum through this week and into the next for the Championships in Arkansas.
The Wildcats will know Monday who officially made it into the NCAA Indoor Championships, and business will be back to normal as the Wildcats will begin preparation for the March 8-9 competition.
