Legislators agree on across-the-board raise
New plan gives all employees $1,450 increase; governor expected to approve raises this week
PHOENIX - State legislative leaders reached a compromise yesterday morning that could give all employees a $1,450 raise and draw the battle of employee pay raises and the state budget to an end.
Gov. Jane Dee Hull is expected to sign the budget later this week, once delivered tomorrow to her office. House of Representatives Speaker Jim Weiers halted the budget approved Friday from reaching Hull.

Cut in UA salary funds averted
Legislature may still decide where additional cuts will come from
PHOENIX - The budget compromise reached by the Legislature yesterday excluded an addition intended to force state agencies to return half of the unused salaries of employees who leave their jobs.
The initiative was found particularly threatening by Arizona's public universities, University of Arizona lobbyist Greg Fahey said. Nearly every college and department at UA has vacant positions to which the state allocates funds.

U.S. media is not liberal
In his letter to the editor on Friday, March 9 ("Directed to the 'left'"), Stephen Bieda claims that the "liberal" media has not reported on the brutal shooting of a Navy SEAL after he dropped off a helicopter. I hate to break it to you, Mr. Bieda, but the media isn't liberal. That's a myth perceived by the extreme right and exploited by the moderate right when it works for them.
