Wildcats end practice with spring game

The 2002 season might not start for another five months, but that doesn't mean that what happens in April won't be remembered in August.

UA head football coach John Mackovic said he is out to evaluate players tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Arizona Stadium in the spring game, the final practice of the spring.

"Tomorrow will help us see someone in an evaluative position because they are playing in a game-like situation," said Mackovic, who will be coaching his second spring game since arriving at Arizona. "Some of these guys have not had that yet."

If you go:
What: Spring football game
Where: Arizona Stadium
Time: 1 p.m.
Admission: Free
Free Food: Bear Down field from 11 a.m. -12:30 p.m.

One of those players is freshman quarterback Nic Costa. Mackovic said Costa, who redshirted in 2001, and last year's starter Jason Johnson will split time in the game.

In last year's game, Johnson solidified his position as the starting quarterback, leading his blue team to a 21-0 win. At the time, Johnson was competing with six other quarterbacks for the starting job following the departure of Ortege Jenkins.

"Some of our veteran players may not play as much (tomorrow), but they will get to play," Mackovic said. "It's just about getting into that game atmosphere, getting ready and getting hyped up a bit."

When Mackovic was asked which players fans should watch at the game, he named Costa and freshmen halfbacks Gainus Scott and Mike Bell. On defense, he said to keep an eye on freshman tackle Brad Brittain and sophomore tackle Carlos Williams.

The Wildcats will be split in two different teams - red and blue - with Johnson and Costa leading the blue team.

During the game, there will be no live kicking, meaning that all punts will result in a fair catch.

Prior to the spring game, the UA athletics department is holding a Pigskin Pigout with free food.
