With the outdoor track and field season quickly coming to an end, the competition just seems to get tougher and tougher for UA.
Tomorrow, the Wildcats will travel to Tempe to compete against a number of highly talented teams in the Sun Angel Classic, played host to by Arizona State.
UA will face competition from Arizona State, Auburn, Brigham Young (women only), Florida, Texas (men only), Southern California, Alabama and several other schools.
USC comes into the meet with its women ranked No. 1, and the Alabama men are the highest-ranked men's team in the meet at No. 12, according to the latest Trackwire 25 Poll.
"In a sense, this is the best competition we'll see all year long," UA assistant coach Fred Harvey said. "There are six schools in this meet that will contend in the national championship, so it's going to be tough."
With only a few meets remaining before the NCAA Championships, coaches Dave Murray and Harvey are running out of time to get their athletes qualified for the season finale.
"This is championship season, and we've geared our training for this time," Harvey said.
"This is really going to be a sprinting meet," Murray said. "Auburn, Florida and LSU are all sprinting schools, and I'm sure there will be some good times."
After a strong effort last week from both the men's and women's teams in the California vs. Arizona Challenge, the Wildcat squads continue to improve.
Senior Brianna Glenn won the 100m and long jump last week, and this week, she'll be faced with tough competition from the USC sprinters.
"Glenn will be going up against this year's indoor champion in the long jump, and she'll also be running against Angela Williams of USC, who is this year's indoor champion in the 100m," Murray said.
Senior Mike Kenyon won the 200m and the 400m last week and hopes to earn a qualifying time in the 400m this week.
"Kenyon will face some good competition in the 400m, and he needs a good qualifying time," Murray said. "Last week, the weather conditions weren't very good, so he couldn't qualify. But, this week we'll be under the lights at ASU and the weather conditions should be perfect."
Sophomore pole vaulter Amy Linnen won't compete this week, along with some of the distance runners, in an effort to rest up for next week's meet at Mount San Antonio.
However, Harvey said he has high expectations for this weekend's competition.
"We're sharp and ready to perform, and the weather has given us a great opportunity to see some great performance," he said.
