The No. 1 Arizona softball team used its usual recipe for success - dominating pitching and timely hitting - to win three straight games on the road in Oregon this weekend.
The Wildcats knocked off No. 14 Oregon State (32-13 overall, 5-3 Pac-10) 4-0 on Friday before handing Oregon (18-18, 0-9) consecutive defeats, 2-0 and 8-1, over the weekend.
UA (38-5, 7-1) cruised to victory Friday after scoring three runs in the first inning against the Beavers on the opening day of an eight-game road trip. Senior pitcher Jennie Finch delivered an RBI double and sophomore catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest followed with a two-run single in the inning. In the sixth, sophomore pitcher Jenny Gladding added an RBI single for Arizona.
Finch (22-1) was once again dominant in the circle in her first game since having her NCAA record 60-game winning streak snapped. She scattered five hits while striking out eight in the victory, and helped herself with a 2-for-3 day at the plate including two doubles.
The Wildcats had to fight for a victory on Saturday against an Oregon team that has gone winless in the Pac-10 this season. Finch was even more impressive in the circle than the previous day, allowing only a single while striking out 12, in earning her 14th shutout of the season.
Arizona was led offensively by junior shortstop Lovie Jung who put the Wildcats on the board with her 13th home run of the season in the fifth inning. She added an RBI single in the seventh to score freshman utility player Carrie Hagen and help secure the victory.
Gladding (16-4) coasted to her 16th win of the season yesterday, allowing just two hits. She was equally effective at the plate with a pair of RBIs, including a first-inning home run and an RBI groundout in the sixth.
The Wildcats blew the game open with a five-run seventh inning that was highlighted by third baseman Jackie Coburn's grand slam - her tenth home run of the season.
The freshman finished the day 3-for-3 with five runs batted in.
UA will continue its road trip with a pair of games in Oklahoma City Tuesday and Wednesday, including a rematch of a College World Series classic of a year ago against No. 9 Oklahoma.
