The Arizona men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches to No. 17 California, 2-5, and No. 6 Stanford, 1-6, this weekend at the Robson Tennis Center.
The Wildcats' record fell to 8-11 overall and 1-8 in the Pacific 10 Conference.
Senior Steven Capriati and freshman Colin O'Grady were the only two players to win singles matches in the two series.
Capriati, the No. 40 men's tennis player in the nation, defeated California's Balazs Veress 7-6, 6-4 on Friday but lost a thrilling match to Stanford's 4th-ranked K.J. Hippensteel on Saturday, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
"This weekend was tough. It was tough to lose both matches because we knew we had a chance," Capriati said. "They played well, they did what they had to do."
O'Grady rebounded from a 7-6, 6-4 loss to Cal's Ben Miles and defeated Stanford's Joe Kao 6-4, 6-4.
On the doubles side, the sophomore combination of Whi Kim and Roland Brateanu defeated California's team of Veress and Miles 8-6 on Friday and Stanford's pairing of Hippensteel and Kao 8-6 the following day.
Junior Tom Lloyd also teamed up with O'Grady to defeat Niland and Exon of California, 8-1.
"We played much better (against Stanford) than we did (against Cal)," said head coach Bill Wright. "Yesterday we were very flat and today we played well. We lost three matches 6-4 in the third (set) and if we win those matches, we win the match. That's what is disappointing, but (there's) nothing you can do; they're good, very good."
The most exciting match of the weekend was played between Arizona's Kim and Stanford's David Martin. Kim has gone through a tough stretch in Pac-10 play but after fighting back to win the second set, the sophomore dropped the third set and the match 7-6, 6-7, 6-4.
"(Kim) has had a tough time, but he's back from retirement," Wright said. "(The match against Martin) was very exciting. He showed good promise for the future."
The Wildcats play Cal Poly Thursday in Tucson in a non-conference matchup and then travel to Arizona State two days after.
"We're down at the end of the gutter right now but if we beat ASU, we're right back in the mix," said Capriati. "Hopefully we can use this (to) get some confidence and go and play a good match on Thursday and beat ASU on Saturday."
