After coming off two wins against ranked opponents a week ago, the UA women's tennis team jumped to No. 21 in the rankings with plans of moving even higher after its weekend road trip to the Bay Area.
However, that didn't occur.
The Wildcats were faced with two tough opponents, No. 3 Stanford and No. 15 California, and both proved to be too much for Arizona to handle.
The Cardinal proved why they are No. 3 by scorching the Wildcats 0-7.
Stanford contained the Wildcats' strengths, which lie in the play of sophomore Debbie Larocque and freshman Maja Mlakar.
In singles, No. 13 Mlakar was defeated by No. 10 Lauren Kalvaria 1-6, 2-6 and Larocque lost 0-6, 1-6 to No. 18 Gabriela Lastra.
Besides being strong at the top two positions, Stanford's No. 3 and 4 players are ranked 14th and 24th, respectively.
In doubles, the team of Mlakar and Larocque met their match and were handily defeated by Kalvaria and Lastra, 3-8.
"Stanford was on top of us from the beginning," Larocque said. "We fought hard, but we made too many mistakes against a good team."
The Wildcats had high expectations entering its match with the Cardinal, but they had no time to sulk over their loss, as they had to travel across town to take on the Golden Bears.
UA jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches, but it went downhill from there.
Cal's top player, sophomore Catherine Lynch, upset Mlakar 5-7, 2-6.
The loss marked the third consecutive loss for Mlakar and it was the first career victory at the top position for Lynch.
The only bright spot for Arizona in singles play was Larocque, who was the lone Wildcat to gain a victory as she defeated Raquel Kops-Jones in a tough three-set match, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.
"We started out well against Cal by winning the doubles point," Larocque said. "We had a few surprising losses in singles play. That was the difference. The match could have really went either way."
The two losses over the weekend bring UA's season record to 10-9 overall and 3-9 in Pacific 10 Conference play.
"We were disappointed at the outcome from the weekend," Larocque said. "The experience will help us in the postseason."
The Wildcats conclude their regular season against in-state rival Arizona State Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Robson Tennis Center.
