No Wildcats taken in NFL draft; 3 sign post-draft deals

Option No. 2 for UA offensive lineman Kevin Barry might just work out better than option No. 1.

Barry, who was not taken in the final rounds of last weekend's National Football League draft, signed a deal after the draft with the Green Bay Packers, the team he grew up watching.

"I'm definitely happy to be going back home," said the native of Racine, Wis. "I grew up watching the Packers, so it will be nice to get a chance to play for them. This is the second best option I could have chosen after not being picked."

Wildcat cornerback Jermaine Chatman and offensive lineman Steven Grace both signed free-agent deals after the draft with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Arizona Cardinals, respectively. Senior strong safety Brandon Nash had not yet signed with a team at press time but was still looking.

The three UA players signed with NFL teams after no Arizona players were taken in the draft for the first time in 16 seasons.

The Wildcats were the only team in the Pacific 10 Conference that did not have a player signed. NFL teams selected 32 Pac-10 players during the weekend. UCLA, Stanford and Oregon led the conference, each having six players apiece taken in the draft.

OU quarterback Joey Harrington was the third overall selection by the Detroit Lions, and Arizona State offensive lineman Levi Jones was the 10th overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals. Robert Thomas (UCLA) and Jerramy Stevens (Washington) were other Pac-10 players taken in the first round.

Barry, who will report to mini-camp on Thursday, said he is excited to get to block for one of the league's best quarterbacks: Brett Favre.

"I just want to come and help out anyway I can," Barry said. "Eventually, I would like to crack the starting lineup."
