The Arizona men's volleyball team is no stranger to winning national championships, but claiming three national titles in one weekend is unprecedented.
That's exactly what the Wildcats did last weekend in Dallas, as they won the Division I, II and III championships at the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association Championships.
In his four years as coach of the team, including this year's 45-0 record, Steve Carlat's career mark is an unbelievable 153-4, a .975 winning percentage.
On Saturday, the Division III team beat Cal State Sacramento's B team to win the first championship. Immediately after, the Division II team beat Cincinnati to win the second. With approximately 2,500 spectators, many rooting against the Wildcats, Arizona won the last and most competitive division - Division I - to complete the weekend sweep.
Senior Jeremy Zarowitz said the final match made for a dramatic scene.
"After winning the first (game), all of us (other Wildcat players) went down to the court level and were waiting in the corridor, yelling and pounding on the walls so everyone could hear us," Zarowitz said. "As soon as we won the last point, we all charged the court and were out there for probably 10 minutes chanting 'U of A' and singing 'Bear Down, Arizona.' It was unreal."
The Wildcat Division I team beat Texas A&M in a semifinal thriller, 25-21, 19-25, 15-13.
In the finals, UA beat Providence College (Canada) 25-23, 25-21.
But Arizona's Division I team almost didn't even make it to the championship bracket. On Friday, they lost the first game to rival San Diego State 22-25. The second game was a back-and-forth battle with the Wildcats finally pulling it out, 39-37. They then went on to walk over the Aztecs in the final game, 15-4.
The B team beat the number-one ranked Division II team, Milwaukee Area Technical College, in the semifinals 26-24, 25-23. Then, in the finals, the Wildcats narrowly won the first game, 32-30, before dropping the second game to Cincinnati, 22-25. In the third game, it was all Arizona, 15-9.
The C team had the easiest time of the three teams. The Division III champs didn't lose a single game all weekend. In the semis, they beat the No. 2 ranked DIII team, UC-Davis' B team, 25-19, 25-17. In the finals, they beat the No. 1 ranked DIII team, Cal. St. Sacramento's B team, 25-19, 25-16.
Arizona became the first school to accomplish the three-division sweep in nationals.
Arizona players also made up a significant portion of the all-tournament teams. In Division I, four players were named to the tea: Matt Olson, Kevin Jones, Britt Burridge and MVP Jeff Grobe. Alan Brown and Justin Orkney also were named MVPs in their divisions.
