UMC to discontinue level 1 trauma care

Service could remain available if another local hospital agrees to enter partnership

UMC will no longer offer Level 1 trauma care at year's end if no other southern Arizona hospital joins it in a partnership to offer Level 1 trauma care.

University Medical Center officials said yesterday it does not have the staff or space to be Southern Arizona's only Level 1 trauma center - which has the capacity to efficiently handle any medical emergency.

UMC's decision comes two weeks after the Tucson Medical Center announced it would be closing its Level 1 trauma center because of financial losses.

Trend toward merging of academia and industry state-wide

As part of a movement toward pairing together academia and industry, four UA professors have started a company to turn their research into a product, despite some concern that the company may be a conflict of the professors' interests.

The company will create a new type of microscope-like device that will allow doctors in rural areas to more easily obtain second opinions for a prognosis, extending the reach of rural medicine statewide.
