UA to close Arizona International College

Students currently enrolled in AIC programs will be allowed to finish

Arizona International College will close and its faculty and staff will lose their jobs as their contracts expire, UA officials said yesterday.

No new students will be admitted into AIC programs next fall, while those students already in AIC have four years to complete their current programs, said University of Arizona Provost George Davis.

Student-teacher ratio in comm department dwindles

Officials say department looking to set stiffer standards, hire more faculty

With a student-faculty ratio of more than 100-to-1, the communication department is setting stiffer standards for majors and enlarging faculty size.

Michael Dues, department head of communication, said University of Arizona Provost George Davis is allowing the communication department to hire more professors for next fall despite the 60-day hiring freeze imposed by UA President Peter Likins.

Freedom different for everyone

OK, my problem with the word "freedom" used by Americans is that it means something different to everyone who uses it. The white, heterosexual male will have a vastly different view of freedom than will a non-straight, non-Christian Arab woman like me. People toss the word "freedom" around like it's a universal experience, and I don't think it is.
