Local bands made event worthwhile, students said

Nearly 300 people attended Friday night's CatFest concert despite the recent cancellation of its featured band Eve 6.

"It was an extremely good turnout considering the headline band cancelled at the last minute," said J.J. Kruglick, director of UAB concerts.

"(Eve 6 canceling) was a huge disappointment, but we're still glad students were able to support the local bands," added Associated Students President Ray Quintero.

The event, hosted by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona and the University Activities Board, featured local bands Sunday Afternoon, Warsaw and Tongue Dried Sun in addition to the Pepsi Challenge and Seventeen magazine's campuswide model search.

ASUA also presented a fashion show featuring clothing from local outlets such as Buttes Jean and Clothing Company, Zoe, Divaz, Fourth Avenue Jean Company and The Strand.

Eve 6 was forced to cancel its appearance suddenly Thursday evening due to a case of laryngitis developed by lead singer Max Collins.

Collins sent a fax to the ASUA office Thursday afternoon, officially announcing the cancellation of the show. The illness also forced the band to cancel an earlier performance in Sacramento, Calif.

Even without Eve 6, students said they were not disappointed with the performances of the three local bands.

"I guess (the cancellation) was uncontrollable," said business freshman Bryan Perleberg. "These guys (Sunday Afternoon) sound pretty good though."

"If I had laryngitis I would cancel a show too," added Rick Paz, lead singer of Sunday Afternoon.

Pamela Epstein, special events director for ASUA, said although it's unlikely Eve 6 will be able to reschedule a future concert, there is the possibility of scheduling another outdoor concert for a later date.

"We're looking to schedule a possible event in October, to make up for Eve 6's lack of appearance," she said.

Quintero further commented on the benefits of campus events such as CatFest.

"Anytime we can get students together to relax and have a good time, it's worthwhile," he said.
