Number of rushees significantly higher than in the past
Nearly 700 men signed up to participate in greek rush this semester, which is a much higher number than in the past, said Michael Moran, president of the Interfraternity Council.
"The system (the IFC) uses now is capable of processing the larger group of men," Moran said.
Moran said he attributes the large group of rushees to summer promotions done by the IFC.
"We advertised more during orientation," Moran said.
Fraternity rush, which started last night, involves a weeklong series of events in which male students attempt to gain admission to one of UA's 22 fraternity houses.
Sorority rush ended last week.
The IFC included promotions geared toward men who have no previous fraternal ties to the greek system, Moran said.
Rushees said they are also excited about the week's events.
"I am excited because it is a great way to meet people," said Erich Schmidt, an undeclared freshman. "A lot of my friends have gone through rush and they liked it a lot."
Schmidt added that he is interested in the greek system because it will be beneficial to him after college.
Members of Pi Kappa Alpha are excited about rush as well.
"Every semester we try to make rush fun for the rushees and us," said Cory Cutchall, a business senior. "It's always exciting to meet potential brothers."
Cutchall added that the larger amount of rushees will not affect the process.
"Our house doesn't have a minimal amount of bids we can give," Cutchall said. "And fortunately we don't have a maximum amount (of bids) either."
The week will be packed with house tours, off-campus activities and a preference dinner before rushees receive their bids.
