Candidate's priorities include better rural representation, education

A UA worker who is also a seasoned politician officially announced yesterday that he will run for U.S. Congress.

Jaime Gutierrez, UA assistant vice president for Community Relations, asaid he will run for the Democratic nomination in District 7 - one of two new congressional seats given to Arizona after the 2000 census. [Read article]

Tuition-taking proposal heightens tuition-hike fears

Officials call proposal 'unfair' if realized

PHOENIX - If the Legislature decides to use tuition money to lessen the state budget deficit, university officials say the damage to the UA and other state universities could be staggering.

Under a new proposal from the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, half the revenue generated by tuition would be used for state programs, instead of being returned to the universities. Normally, universities receive all tuition money. [Read article]

Swim, dive teams struggling

The Arizona swimming and diving teams suffered a disappointing turnout this weekend against two of the conference's big guns.

Friday's action in Stanford, Calif., saw the Wildcats (No. 3 women, No. 9 men), who were short five players on the road trip due to disciplinary violations, take on the No. 1 Cardinal. [Read article]
