Freshman guard Salim Stoudamire's streak of made free throws came to an end during Saturday's 100-98 loss to UConn.
The snapping of the 39-shot streak came under unusual circumstances, as freshman forward Isaiah Fox was fouled and hit the floor hard. Fox was taken out of the game temporarily and replaced by Stoudamire.
Stoudamire's effort was recognized by loud applause by the McKale Center crowd following his miss.
The freshman said he was not too worried about the streak ending.
"On that particular shot, I didn't get my legs into it," Stoudamire said. "I missed, and there is nothing I can do about it."
Stoudamire's second shot was waived off because of a lane violation.
The Lake Oswego, Ore. native is now 49-of-51 (.961) from the free-throw line on the season and still leads the nation in free-throw percentage.
Stoudamire's 39 consecutive free throws is currently the Arizona record.
The injury that forced Fox from the game is a recurring one, head coach Lute Olson said.
Olson said at times, Fox's shoulder will pop slightly out of the socket for a moment and then return to its natural position.
"He has had a problem with the shoulder popping out," Olson said. "He is sore, but it shouldn't be a problem."
Olson said both Fox and freshman center Channing Frye share the same shoulder trouble, but the problem can be prevented by the addition of muscle around the shoulder.
"It is a matter of building up the muscle structure to keep that from happening," Olson said.
After starting the season with three straight victories over top-25 teams, the No. 19 Wildcats have gone 3-3 in their last six games against ranked opponents, bringing their record against ranked teams to 6-3 on the season.
Two of the three losses came at home. The first was to Kansas on Dec. 1, and the second Saturday against UConn.
In both of those games, Arizona gave up 100 or more points. Those, along with a 105-75 loss to unranked Oregon, mark the three games on the season that the Wildcats have given up 100 points.
Prior to this season, Arizona had only given up 100 points three times in the previous 18 seasons.
