Despite injuries, women's tennis sweeps weekend homestand

The Arizona women's tennis team won its first three dual meets of the season this weekend, defeating New Mexico, Kansas State and San Diego in a three-day home sweep.

The Wildcats put the finishing touches on the sweep Sunday, defeating New Mexico, 5-2.

The Wildcat women dominated San Diego - winning all nine matches - on Saturday, and defeated Kansas State in their first dual meet of the season Friday.

Freshman Maja Mlakar and sophomore Debbie Larocque, who are doubles partners, dominated play this weekend, with a combined 6-0 singles record to go along with their 3-0 doubles record.

Mlakar, a freshman who first-year head coach Vicky Maes said she considers the most powerful player on the team, hails from Slovenia and is currently spending her first year in the United States here at UA.

Larocque, a sophomore from Lavel, Canada, dominated her matches on the weekend, winning each in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 sweep on Friday of Petra Sedlmajerova of Kansas State.

Despite her dominance, Larocque is actually the No. 2-seeded singles player for the Wildcats. Mlakar is currently seeded first, winning her matches with relative ease as well.

Maes stressed the importance of the weekend's victories heading into the Pacific 10 Conference opener at Oregon in two weeks.

"There were no surprises in the way they performed here," Maes said. "These girls understand that the idea of a team concept in an individual sport might be hard to grasp, but they are all coming through and understanding their roles as part of a team."

Maes said she was happy the team was able to come out energized this weekend, despite a string of injuries throughout the group.

"They are a little nervous, but being 3-0 going into Pac-10 play is a great boost for us," she said. "The long layoff will help them to recover and get back to top shape. The Pac-10 is definitely the strongest conference in the country, and our team needs to rest up so they play hard and help to return the program to greatness."

The Wildcat women's tennis team will begin Pac-10 play in Eugene, Ore., Feb. 17 to take on the Ducks.
