Preservation of land in the United States isn't a concern quite as looming as it is in, say, Mexico City or Japan. But it is a concern nonetheless, and you can find out more about how places in New Mexico are producing ideas to preserve land. Join Chris Wilson, a professor of cultural landscape studies at the University of New Mexico for "New Urbanist Interventions in New Mexico." The lecture runs from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering building, Room 202. For more information, contact R. Brooks Jeffery at 621-2991 or send e-mail to rbjeffer@u.arizona.edu.
Nearly 20 years ago, the Chicago City Council waged an internal, city-wide battle in an attempt to improve the city and the governmental body. Out from the dust and commotion came Dorothy Tillman, an alderman from the third ward in one of the world's largest and busiest cities. She will be at the University of Arizona today from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. to lecture about slavery reparations nationally and globally. A reception follows until 4 p.m. Tillman is also the National Reparation Committee Chairman. She will be speaking in the Integrated Learning Center, Room 130. For more information, call 621-3491.
After all the serious talk, head down to the Social Sciences building, Room 100, to check out a charity fashion show featuring 30 UA models and children from schools throughout Tucson. The show is sponsored by the University Activities Board and Project Volunteer, and runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. All donations collected will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. For more information, contact Drew Berns at 626-4906 or e-mail him at drewb@email.arizona.edu.
Always busy on Friday, the University Activities Board brings the psychedelic and freakish nature of the 1960s and 1970s to the Park Student Union Turquoise Room, in the form of the flick "Dazed and Confused." Tickets for the parody of your parents' high school days cost $2 and include all the popcorn and pizza you can munch on. For more information, contact Diana Ziegler at 621-0768.
