The UA baseball team will be in Texas this afternoon for its first road trip of the year.
Arizona stops in Corpus Christi today and will move on to College Station against Texas A&M for a three-game set this weekend.
The road trip will allow the team to enjoy some time outside of Tucson.
"It'll be fun; when you're on the road, you think about baseball and not having to worry about attending class," freshman first baseman Will Thompson said.
Today, No. 20 Arizona takes on Texas A&M U-Corpus Christi.
TAMU-CC (4-1) beat both Sam Houston State and Texas Southern on Sunday to rebound from its first loss of the season on Friday. The Islanders played the University of Texas in Austin yesterday, but the results were not available at press time.
Four Islander pitchers combined on a three-hitter against TSU to clinch the second victory of the day. Reliever Eric Martanovic pitched 5 2/3 innings for his victory.
TAMU-CC swept a season-opening double header against Incarnate Word from San Antonio on Feb. 6.
Last year, the Islanders finished 18-36 in the program's second year of existence.
Freshman UA pitcher Will Miller will make his second start of the season today. Miller will try to lower his 18.00 ERA after his last start against Southern Utah and a relief appearance earlier in the season.
UA second baseman Moises Duran enters the game with a .278 average, 13 RBIs and a .611 slugging percentage. His three home runs on the year are two more than all of last year, although the sophomore doesn't have any answers for his recent power surge.
"I can't explain it; I'm just trying to put the bat on the ball," he said. "I'm not that big, but I can hit the ball a long way."
Last year, the Wildcats swept the Islanders in Tucson, April 12-14, by a combined score of 42-16. Former UA right fielder Shelly Duncan hit for the cycle in the final game of the series.
But last season's success coupled with TAMU-CC's inexperience won't be taken lightly by the Wildcats.
"We really don't care who we play; (head coach Andy) Lopez wants us to play the game hard with every pitch because if you take a pitch off, it could be the one that beats you," Duran said.
Sophomore outfielder Clarence Farmer hit three home runs batting left-handed Sunday in the All-Pro Alumni Game despite a swirling wind.
However, his power has yet to be shown on the field.
After walking on to the team, Farmer has pinch run twice and struck out in his lone at bat of the year.
Farmer, who was named the MVP of the football team last fall, has compiled 1,895 rushing yards in his two-year career and led the Pacific 10 Conference in yards this past season.
Even though baseball is clearly his secondary sport, the Houston native doesn't view the game differently.
"I feel anything that you are a part of you're supposed to give it your all. I'm here playing baseball and it's baseball season, so I'm going to give the team all that they deserve," he said.
