Gymcats host No. 8 Stanford

By James Kelley

Tonight, the No. 17 Arizona gymnastics team will compete against its fourth-straight ranked opponent in No. 8 Stanford öö most likely without sophomore Jamie Schell.

After losing to No. 1 UCLA last Sunday at Pauley Pavilion, the Wildcats (4-6, 1-3) return home to face Stanford (8-2-1, 3-1-1) at 7:30 p.m. at McKale Center.

Because of the rash of injuries the Gymcats have suffered this season, sophomore Jamie Duce was forced into action in the all-around against UCLA, where she posted a personal record of 38.750.

"We're getting a little better," said head coach Bill Ryden.

Junior Andi McCabe will compete, though still in a limited role, but sophomore Jamie Schell is not likely to be back until next week.

"We hit a lot of our routines at UCLA, but we need to have a team effort on the beam and bars and completely put the screws down," Ryden said.

Sophomore Monica Bisordi ÷ who has 31 top-five finishes, four all-around titles, three beam titles and two floor titles ÷ and fellow sophomore Katie Johnson have been the team's strongest competitors of late, shouldering a lot of the burden caused by the team's injuries.

"With the injuries, we have a lot less room for error," Ryden said.

Last year, Arizona went 1-2 against the Cardinal, falling in Palo Alto during the regular season and splitting with Stanford in the Pac-10 Championships and at the National Championships.

Junior Lise Lˇvillˇ, the nation's fifth-ranked gymnast in the all-around, leads Stanford, which returns 10 from last year's sixth place finish nationally, including three All-Americans.

A major reason for the Gymcats' tough schedule is that they compete in the Pacific-10 Conference, where all seven of the conference's women's gymnastics teams are ranked in the top-25 and five individuals rank in the nation's top 10.

The byproduct of the tough schedule is that it prepares the team well for the postseason, but also that even though the team is hurting, they can't rest anyone, Ryden said.

"We're certainly not afraid of the postseason," Ryden said. "We have to bring our best effort every week."
