The Arizona softball team found itself in a familiar place in the polls yesterday, but no one would know it from the group's reaction.
The ESPN.com/USA Today poll released yesterday has UA in the No. 1 position, the first time this season the Wildcats have moved to the top spot. Tied with UCLA (26-2) at 438 points, Arizona received 10 first place votes, compared to the Bruins' eight.
Inside Hillenbrand Stadium, however, the Wildcats are unfazed and have stayed indifferent to the numbers all season.
"I think the polls are something we don't get into," said head coach Mike Candrea. "We still have to come to play."
Candrea is pleased that people are recognizing the work the team has done, but he and his team will wait until the final dust has settled.
No player on the team seemed affected by the decision, and everyone is adamant that the final poll is the one that matters.
"It's good for the fans, but to us it really doesn't matter," said junior catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest.
Last week Arizona was ranked No. 2 with 412 points and no first place votes. Over the weekend DePaul defeated UCLA by a score of 1-0.
