Rugby takes out frustrations on ASU, wins share of title

By James Kelley

Down 21-17 to ASU with ten minutes to play, the UA men's rugby team was in danger of losing a share of the conference title, but senior Wailie Sallas had something to say about that.

After the Sun Devils took the lead 21-17, Sallas scored his second try of the day, picking off an ASU pass and taking it for the score. The 25-21 win was the 14th straight over the Sun Devils for the Wildcats (10-4, 7-1) and clinched a piece of their fourth SoCal conference championship since the league was started in 1997.

After Sallas' second try, the Wildcats found themselves a man down after Fullback Justin Kunz was red carded for kicking a Sun Devil. Arizona responded with a field goal by center Josh May at the end of the match to make it 25-21.

Even though Arizona finished in a tie for first in the SoCal conference, it will have to stay home for the playoffs because of the conference's tie breaking procedures.

"It's a screwy format but it was in play at the start of the season," said head coach Dave Sitton.

Since the Wildcats lost to Cal Poly to start conference play, Arizona won all its league matches and out scored opponents 277-73.

About 100 former players returned for Alumni Weekend, highlighted by John Packer who came all the way from London and addressed team at breakfast. An Alumni Board was also formed, something Sitton was excited about.

"They were all tickled to see their Cats," Sitton said.

Saturday at Estevan Park, the Wildcats close their spring semester with the first Wilbur Cup, where the program's intercollegiate teams, varsity and JV, will face off against its two Union teams.
