photo Athlete of the Week: Jung helps 'Cats get a grip on Pac-10 lead

Name: Lovie Jung
Sport: Softball
Year: RS Senior
Position: Shortstop
Jersey: # 3
Hometown: Fountain Valley, Calif.

Why: After a weekend that saw the Wildcats go 3-0 with two wins in Westwood, Calif. against No. 1 UCLA, and a win in Seattle versus No. 4 Washington, Jung's individual performance was, once again, clutch.

On Sunday, in the top of the seventh inning, nursing a one-run lead, bases loaded, with the meat of the Bruins due up, Jung slapped the scoreboard in left field with the neon grapefruit. [Read article]

Tennis trips up Texas in home sweep

The UA women's tennis team took on the Longhorns of the University of Texas yesterday, looking to spoil the homecoming of one of Tucson's own.

In front of a Texas-sized crowd, Kendra Strohm, the Longhorns' number one singles player, returned to the Old Pueblo yesterday, leading her Texas squad against the No. 45 Wildcats.

Despite overwhelming crowd support, the freshman would have her spotlight stolen by UA's Emilie Scribot and her Wildcats, who led Arizona to a 7-0 sweep on the afternoon. [Read article]

Van Houten earns Pac-10 award

Arizona sophomore Jeff Van Houten has been named the Pac-10 baseball Player of the Week. The honor is the second of the season for Van Houten and the fifth weekly award for an Arizona player/pitcher this season.

Van Houten garnered his second recognition of the year, and his career, for his 9-for-13 weekend against Miami (Ohio). The second-year starter batted .692 with two triples, his seventh home run of the season, five runs scored and a team-high eight RBIs. He posted a .714 on-base percentage and tallied a 1.231 slugging percentage in helping Arizona win its final non-conference series of the season. In Sunday's 9-4 win, he finished 3-for-4 with a career-high-tying six RBIs and needed just a double to hit for the cycle. He was recognized by the Pac-10 previously this season for the week of March 10-17. [Read article]

Syracuse students celebrate first title

SYRACUSE, N.Y. ÷ Maybe it was the ounces upon ounces of alcohol consumed during the game. Or, perhaps, the beginnings of an April snowstorm. Likely, it was simply winning a national title.

Thousands of Syracuse University students flocked from dorms, the Carrier Dome and bars to celebrate on Marshall Street. And celebrate they did. More than 100 police greeted the fans, barricaded crowds, put out fires and, generally, tried to subdue the masses. [Read article]
