· 1947: Jackie Robinson became baseball's first black major league player when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers on opening day.

· 1862: A bill ending slavery in the District of Columbia became law.
· 1999: Wayne Gretzky announced his retirement from hockey.

· 1964: The Ford Motor Company unveiled its new Mustang model.
· 1993: A federal jury in Los Angeles convicted two former police officers of violating the civil rights of beaten motorist Rodney King; two other officers were acquitted.

· 1775: Paul Revere began his famous ride from Charlestown to Lexington, Mass., warning American colonists that the British were coming.
· 1906: A devastating earthquake followed by raging fires struck San Francisco. Nearly 700 people died.
