Top-ranked Arizona outscores visiting No. 12 Sun Devils 10-1 at home in two-game weekend sweep

Sun Devils learn from their mistakes.

On Friday, after intentionally walking senior Lovie Jung in the first inning, they pitched to her in the third, with two runners on. All three of them scored with Jung's homer to left field as Arizona ran it up 8-0 over ASU.

On Saturday, No. 12 Arizona State (28-15, 5-6 Pac-10) took no such chances, walking Jung at all three at-bats. Meanwhile, the Wildcats prevailed, 2-1.

The No. 1 Wildcats (41-4, 10-1 Pac-10) had to rely on means other than home-run leader Jung to prevail Saturday night in front of 2,811 fans.

Arizona had a chance to do damage in the bottom of the first with the bases loaded and no outs. Freshman Autumn Champion bunted her way on, right-fielder Courtney Fossatti took four balls and Jung intentionally loaded the bases. ASU pitcher Desiree Serrano managed to get herself out of the situation by retiring three Wildcat batters in a row with two strikeouts and foul pop-up.

Starting pitcher Wendy Allen, who has been plagued by a bad hand all season, gave up a solo homer to ASU's Phelan Wright in the top of the second. The Sun Devils would score no more.

Freshman Alicia Hollowell came into the game with one out in the top of the third and shut down the ASU batters, allowing only two hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The Wildcats erased the 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the fourth when second baseman Lisha Ribellia walked with two outs, then made her way to third and scored when center-fielder Crystal Farley sent a grounder between the middle infielders.

The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead when Jung moved to third off of sacrifice-bunt from catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest and then scored from a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jackie Coburn.

Hollowell allowed the bases to get juiced in the sixth inning by walking the bases loaded with two outs. A rare wild pitch by Hollowell got by Vandergeest, but Vandergeest gathered the ball and tossed it to a covering Hollowell who tagged the runner out at home, ending the predicament and the inning.

On Friday the Wildcats downed ASU 8-0, behind the arm of Hollowell, who threw a one-hit shutout while her teammates collected 14 hits against the Sun Devils.

The top of the order was lethal for the Wildcats as leadoff Champion went 3-of-4, all singles and Fossatti went 4-of-4, also all singles. Jung homered after being walked in her first at-bat, and doubled en route to four RBIs.

The mercy rule came into effect in the fifth inning when UA went up 8-0 after Fossatti hit her fourth single of the game, driving home Farley for the final run.

Hollowell is now 26-3, breaking the all-time freshman pitching record for Arizona.

The Wildcats face the Sun Devils again Wednesday in Tempe at 7 p.m. It will be the third and final meeting of the regular-season between the two rivals.
