The No. 1 Arizona softball team will try to show its rival, No. 12 ASU, that it's just as strong the third time around when it travels to Sun Devil territory tonight.
Arizona (10-1), the Pacific-10 Conference leader, jumped ahead of second place UCLA (8-3) by two games after it swept the Sun Devils in last weekend's two-game, in-state rivalry at UA's Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
The tables will turn as the Wildcats (41-4) take on ASU for the last time this season. After drawing a season-high record of 2811 fans last weekend, the Wildcats won't have that same comfort tonight.
"We are going in with the same approach," head coach Mike Candrea said. "Nothing is different. We need to be aggressive early on and take the crowd out of the game."
The first time around proved to be no problem for freshman pitcher Alicia Hollowell, as she shut out the Sun Devils 8-0 Friday night. However, it was the offensive power of senior shortstop Lovie Jung, who alone drove in half the team's eight runs.
Jung hit a homerun ÷ her 22nd of the season ÷ and a double, good for four RBIs.
Outfielders Courtney Fossatti and Autumn Champion chipped in offensively, tallying four and three singles, respectively.
The Wildcats ended the game by implementing the eight-run mercy rule, and Hollowell picked up her 26th victory, breaking former UA pitcher Becky Lemke's freshman record of 25 wins in 1998.
"Alicia has given us great innings, and Lovie is very consistent," Candrea said. "That is the number one thing that a coach worries about is consistency."
A day later, it was a different story as Arizona slipped by ASU 2-1.
Junior pitcher Wendy Allen pitched the first two innings, but was pulled in the third inning because of pain in her left arm that has plagued her the entire season.
Hollowell got the call and gave up just two hits in her fourth relief appearance this year.
Sophomore Crystal Farley, who slapped a single in UA's 1-0 winning effort over defending national champions Cal last weekend, singled up the middle and drove in the tying run.
Jung later scored off of a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Jackie Coburn in the fifth inning, slipping by the Sun Devils by one run.
While the Wildcats are ahead in the conference race, they lead the Pac-10 in numerous individual categories as well.
Hollowell (27-3) leads the pack in individual pitching with a .63 ERA in 33 appearances.
The UA freshman is also ahead of the race in strikeouts with 259.
Jung herself leads the conference in five categories.
The senior shortstop has hit a conference high of 22 homeruns, 17 doubles, 64 RBIs and has 48 runs scored and 142 total bases.
The Wildcats continue on the road to take on the Oregon schools this weekend.
Arizona starts at Oregon on Friday, and then takes on Oregon State on Saturday and Sunday.
The Wildcats will make one more road trip to NorCal before they conclude their season, with their last two games at home against UCLA and Washington.
The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. against the Sun Devils.
