(U-WIRE) GAINESVILLE, Fla. ÷ The University of Florida's Beta Theta Pi Fraternity has been charged with serving an underage member alcohol at a party on Aug. 25, according to a letter from the Dean of Students Office.
The new 17-year-old member was rushed to the emergency room of Shands Hospital at UF by two other fraternity members when he became incoherent and started vomiting blood, according to a University Police report.
University Police could not disclose the name of the member because of his age.
After the party, members returned to the house at 13 Fraternity Row. Two members took the boy to the hospital at 6 a.m. and later told police the minor had also smoked marijuana.
The minor attended a fraternity party hosted off campus by members of Beta Theta Pi, according to the charge letter.
Kegs, hunch punch and other liquor was available to underage members at the party, which was hosted at a house near Williston Road and 34th Street, the letter states.
Interfraternity Council's Recruitment Week ended one day prior to the incident. During the week, fraternities organize parties for potential members but are prohibited from serving alcohol.
A formal hearing of the Greek Judicial Board is being scheduled, said Cyrus Williams, assistant dean of students and director for judicial affairs. The board will consist of four IFC representatives and two judicial board members from two of the three remaining greek councils.
Chapter representatives of Beta Theta Pi did not return phone calls.
