Campus buildings defaced by graffiti

An unidentified person or persons spray-painted various phrases on UA buildings and possibly an underpass yesterday, but some students reported seeing the graffiti Wednesday.

A student called UAPD yesterday from an emergency call box located on the southwest corner of the Music building. The student said he saw a man in a black hooded sweatshirt spray-painting a wall of the Mines building, 1235 E. North Campus Drive.

After arriving at the scene, police learned that seven other buildings and the Olive underpass, which runs beneath East Speedway Boulevard, had also been tagged, reports stated.

The phrases, written in black spray-paint, ranged from "UA needs affirmative action" on the Mines building, to "UAPD we're watching you" on Yavapai Residence Hall. The name of UAPD officer Robb Fountain was painted on the BioSciences East building.

Fountain was recently disciplined for "gross misconduct" after throwing a UA professor on the ground, tearing her clothes and breaking her glasses, during a confrontation regarding her alleged involvement in a hit-and-run accident.

On Wednesday, protesters called for the immediate dismissal of Fountain and Officer Thomas Hawke. In April, Hawke detained Professor Julian Kunnie, claiming he matched the description of a man who had pulled a knife on a local sandwich shop employee.

The protesters also accused UAPD of racism and requested that a citizen's review board be formed to oversee the police and ensure that racial profiling policies be stopped.

The Center for Creative Photography and the Marley and Harvill buildings were also tagged, but the graffiti has been removed from all the buildings.

UAPD was unavailable for comment.
