Wildcats top Golden Bears

The No. 1 Arizona softball team (48-4, 17-1) defeated No. 9 California (40-16, 9-9), 6-0 in a makeup game that was rained out last Friday.

Senior Lovie Jung hit a two-run homerun in the fifth inning to put Arizona up, 2-0. Jung currently leads the nation with 24 home runs. Junior Mackenzie Vandergeest reached base when Cal pitcher Kelly Anderson walked her. Vandergeest advanced to third when sophomore Jackie Coburn doubled to center field. Vandergeest and Coburn scored when freshman Shelly Schultz singled. [Read article]

Fred Harvey had his work cut out for him this season as the first-year head coach of UA track and field took the reins after 15 years as a Wildcat assistant.

Harvey had the dubious task of replacing a UA sports icon, former head coach Dave Murray. After 35 years of dedication to UA track and field, Murray's tenure as an Arizona coach was the third longest in school history. The only two coaches with longer stays at UA was legendary basketball skipper Fred Enke (36 years) and former Athletic Director J.F. "Pop" McKale, who manned the front offices of Arizona for 35 years as well. [Read article]

Commentary: 'Cats making noise during NBA playoffs

Sure, the playoffs for the league of wife beaters is just to kill time in between the real basketball tournament and the MLB All Star game, but since you go to a major basketball school, the NBA playoffs do have meaning. (The multi-overtimes are fun in the NHL playoffs, but when you think about it, aren't you just watching two teams who can't score?)

Not only are there former UA players on three of the remaining teams (five total), announcers Sean Elliott and Tom Tolbert donned the cardinal and navy too. If only there was a way to listen to Elliott and mute the master of the obvious, Brent Musburger. Here is your Arizona alumni playoff guide: [Read article]

Women's golf begins quest

Hungry 'Cats look to rebound at NCAA regional tournament

The women's golf team starts its second test of the postseason Thursday as it begins play at the 2003 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional as the number two seed.

After a disappointing second place finish in the Pac-10 Championships last week, ending a streak of three consecutive years with the win, head coach Greg Allen continues to stay optimistic as his crew gets ready to head to the east coast for the first time since November. [Read article]

The race for the conference title heated up between Stanford, Arizona State and Arizona last weekend.

No. 9 Stanford (31-14, 13-5), who is two games in front of Arizona, swept Southern California last weekend. The Cardinal won both games of a double header on Saturday by identical 8-4 scores.

Stanford catcher Ryan Garko was named conference Player of the Week after he went 10-13 with three home runs, two doubles and 12 RBI. Pitcher Mark Romanczuk threw a three-hit complete game shutout and ran his record to 9-0 on Saturday. [Read article]
