Male athlete of the year
Ricky Barnes, golf ÷ If the senior would have just won the U.S. Amateur Championship, that would have been enough to get him nominated. But his name appearing on the leaderboard at the Masters, and his consistency for the men's golf team, puts him on top. No one could have realistically thought that Barnes would win at Augusta, but as he hung with the leaders, we all couldn't help but wonder, "What if he did take home the green jacket?" Alas, it was not to be, but it's clear that Barnes deserves to be on the pro tour. [Read article]

Commentary: ...And on that note, I am out of here

Since the end of the men's basketball season, I have been keeping a low profile at the Wildcat.

It's not because I have had nothing to write, but really wanted to see if a new brand of writers could step up and fill the pages I had worried about for almost four years.

Today, coincidentally my birthday (I'll be at Dirtbag's tonight), my time as a reporter at the Wildcat will come to an end, and it will be tough to say goodbye. [Read article]

photo Women's tennis off to NCAA tourney

Arizona tennis will take its show on the road this weekend to Bean-Town, where the No. 16 ranked women begin first-round action in the NCAA regional tournament.

The nations fifth ranked player in Emilie Scribot and No. 29 Maja Mlakar lead the Wildcats into Boston on Friday and Saturday to compete against their first round draw, Niagara University.

Joining Arizona and Niagara in their 16th seed bracket will be host team Harvard and Oklahoma State. [Read article]

Track sends 2 to Pac-10s

Arizona will be off with the starting gun this weekend as two of its athletes travel to southern California to kick-off the Pac-10 Combined Championships.

Amanda Underwood and Jake Arnold will represent the Wildcats this Saturday and Sunday on the campus of the University of Southern California. The two will be looking to put some early points on the board for the Wildcats, who send a full squad to Los Angeles the following week. [Read article]

Polk earns Team USA tryout

After her stellar freshman season, women's basketball star Shawntinice Polk has been noticed around the country, to say the least.

Now she will have a chance to take on the world's best, as she has been invited to the USA Basketball Women's National Team Trials, USA Basketball announced on Tuesday. Polk is one of 60 invitees to the Trials, which will be held May 22-25 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo. [Read article]

Men's tennis off to NCAAs

The Arizona men's tennis team will travel to a familiar stadium this weekend to compete in the first round of the NCAA regional tournament.

California will host the first round of the fourth seed bracket on Saturday and Sunday in Berkeley, Calif. The Wildcats enter the 64-team tourney ranked No. 34 in the nation.

The Wildcats have drawn Boise State in their first round match up. Cal. and Sacramento State join the Broncos of Boise and Arizona in the bracket. Should Arizona defeat the Broncos they would go on to face the winner of the Golden Bears versus the Hornets. [Read article]
