One might think that crazy graduation antics, that is, an off-the-wall wardrobe (or even a total lack of wardrobe), are confined to the movies, but one shouldn't forget that movies are inspired by reality.
Graduation at UA has seen its fair share of crazy apparel.
"There is a lot of stuff, people get very creative," said Alexis Hernandez, associate dean of students. "Some people do some very elaborate pieces on their mortar boards and it is very neat."
Some less traditional graduates have been known paint their mortarboards with messages for onlookers like: "Thanks Mom," "Got a job," and "Need a job," Hernandez said.
Other additions to mortarboards are more artistic. Many people decorate the caps with glitter.
"Architecture students design things and put little buildings on there," Hernandez said.
What administrators will permit into the graduation ceremony is not entirely clear though.
"It depends on if it blocks people's view. There is no set policy," Hernandez says.
There is one rule ÷ "Wear clothes," Hernandez said.
Graduates cannot participate in the ceremony unless they are wearing a cap and gown. What students wear under the gown is up to them.
"Some of my buddies are wearing only tube socks because it is very hot in Arizona. They are maximizing ventilation and taking advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity," said art senior Peter Stokes.
Not all graduates are so bold. In fact, many graduates never come across their nudist peers.
"I have heard about people doing stuff, but I have never actually seen it," said graduating music theater senior Deborah Harris.
Most people will just wear slacks or dresses under their gowns. But Arizona is so laid back that many people will wear jeans, Harris said.
"Back east graduation is more of a formal thing, but out here I hear it is pretty casual," she said. "I am just wearing a dress."
