Likins' revised budget stresses research

TEMPE ÷ The UA is bracing for more cuts because the state simply has no money to give, President Peter Likins told the Arizona Board of Regents yesterday.

Likins plans to alter a budget request for next year that he will present to the today at ASU in light of the potentially growing budget cuts.

He originally planned to request funds for operational programs, such as hiring of more graduate teaching assistants, granting raises to slow the loss of staff and faculty to higher-paying institutions, and dedicating more money for research on water quality and sustainability in Arizona. Regents praise ÎChanging Directions'

TEMPE ÷ The Arizona Board of Regents praised yesterday the overview of President Peter Likins' plans to limit enrollment and cut some academic programs that are not financially self-supporting or essential to research, and to increase tuition and financial aid.

Several board members said Likins' plans should be put into action as soon as possible, since the proposal is intended to reduce the UA's reliance on the Legislature and tax money. [Read article]

Police arrest man on charge of harassment

A student who police suspect has a history of sexually harassing women at the UA and Pima Community College's East campus was arrested by Pima College police Tuesday.

Traver Brawley, 23, a Pima student, had been arrested earlier in the day by University of Arizona police on three counts each of harassment and assault.

Three UA students complained to UAPD Tuesday evening that Brawley was making unwanted sexual advances ÷ which included physical contact ÷ at the Student Union Memorial Center. [Read article]

Arboretum plans ribbon cutting ceremony for Saturday morning

The UA Campus Arboretum ribbon cutting ceremony and opening celebration will take place this Saturday.

The event will honor past UA botanists, feature tree planting, tours of the Arboretum and a plant sale. The featured speaker of the event will be Dr. David Yetman of "The Desert Speaks."

Cacti and other prizes will also be raffled off at the event. [Read article]
