MISSOULA, Mont. ÷ A University of Montana student fell out of her third-floor Duniway Hall dorm room window early Saturday and is now recovering in a Seattle hospital.
"It appears from witnesses' statements that she was trying to lower herself out the window, and she either slipped or let go," said Jim Lemcke, assistant director of Public Safety.
Kate Browne, a freshman majoring in general studies, suffered a broken pelvis and wrist on impact, according to her roommate, Dahlia Turner.
Turner, a freshman majoring in general studies, added that Browne also underwent surgery to repair a ruptured spleen and liver.
"The reason she was going out the window is unknown," Lemcke said. "But RAs were knocking on her door to investigate on suspicion people in the room were consuming alcohol that were underage. The people in the room would not let the RAs in. She may have been trying to avoid being identified."
Public Safety officers arrived on the scene at about 1:15 a.m. Browne was intoxicated at the time of the incident, according to police records. Lemcke said alcohol was present in the dorm room, but no citations were issued, and the case is under investigation.
Browne denied having fallen from the window, Lemcke said, but several witnesses identified her, and she was soon transferred to St. Patrick Hospital.
"This was definitely life-threatening," Lemcke said.
Browne will remain in Seattle for a few weeks to recover, Turner said.
