Minor In Possession

A student was diverted to the Dean of Students for being a minor in possession of alcohol Monday, after an officer saw him staggering in a street, reports stated.

At about 2 a.m., an officer saw a student staggering in the middle of the northbound lane of North Park Avenue near East Sixth Street.

The officer walked up to the student and asked him if he was OK, and the student said he was. The officer smelled a moderate odor of alcohol on the student's breath. The officer also noticed the student had glassy eyes and his pupils remained dilated when the officer shined a flashlight in his eyes.

The student said he drank, "less than a six pack of Bud Light beer," reports stated.

The officer diverted the student to the Dean of Students for being a minor in possession of alcohol reports stated.

Vandalism

Over the weekend someone poured syrup into "Tucson Weekly" newspaper racks all over the city, reports stated.

A woman reported "Tucson Weekly" newspaper racks all over the city had been vandalized between 5 p.m. on Friday and 7 a.m. on Monday, including one at the Park Student Union, 615 N. Park Ave.

The woman said the rack was vandalized by pouring syrup into the operating mechanisms. She told officers that she suspects the vandal may be a former employee.

There was no evidence left at the racks, reports stated.

Weapons Violation

An 18-year-old passenger and a 13-year-old driver were arrested for being in possession of a defaced deadly weapon Monday, after police pulled over their car, reports stated.

At 4:30 p.m., police saw a car fail to stop at a stop sign while traveling southbound on North Park Avenue at East Fourth Street. Police stopped the car in a parking lot at East Sixth Street.

When the driver got out of the car next to the gas pumps, police noticed she looked very young, and ordered her to stop.

The driver said she did not have a driver's license and handed officers various papers from the glove compartment. Police handed the papers back and told her to look for the vehicle registration. The lone passenger said the car belong to their friend.

The passenger also said she did not have a license. She identified herself as being 18-years-old, and the driver told police she was born in October 1987. An officer said, "So you are 14," and she said "yes," reports stated.

A warrant check showed the driver had a felony warrant for failure to appear in court on a charge of criminal damage and that she was only 13-years-old. Dispatch also advised police the girl had a note in the computer indicating she was affiliated with a gang.

An officer returned to the driver, said he needed to confirm her birth-date, that she was born in 1988, and she said "yes," reports stated.

The driver then told the passenger that she had failed to appear in court. The passenger then tried to comfort the driver, saying that she would write her and that she could not be held for more than six weeks, reports stated.

An officer then saw a nylon bag with a black handle sticking out of it in the backseat. Police recognized the handle as a grip to a rifle or a shotgun. Police removed a pump shotgun from the bag. The shotgun had its breech open and serial number scratched off, reports stated.

No ammunition was found in the shotgun or in the car.

As police took the gun out of the car the passenger said she did not know anything about the weapon, and that it must belong to the owner of the car.

Police later learned from the driver's probation officer that she was a prohibited possessor.

The driver was arrested for possessing a defaced deadly weapon, while being a prohibited possessor and for having a warrant for her arrest. She was taken to the Pima County Juvenile Facility. The passenger was also arrested for possessing the defaced firearm, and was taken to Pima County Jail.

Police had not yet cited the juvenile for failing to stop at a stop sign or driving without a license, reports stated.

Theft

A student reported a man stole $3,275 worth of items from her dorm room while she was sleeping Sunday, reports stated.

The student said she was sleeping in her room at La Paz Residence Hall, 602 N. Highland Ave., at 3:30 p.m. when a man who looked about 20-years-old entered her room and stole her backpack, carry bag and her roommate's laptop. She said she had left the door ajar, reports stated.

She told officers she got a glimpse of the suspect as he ran out of the room. Her roommate was not home at the time of the theft. There are no suspects, reports stated.
