Maybe life without Jennie Finch and Jenny Gladding won't be so bad after all for the UA softball team.

Arizona breezed through the Arizona Fall Classic at Hillenbrand Stadium, finishing the series with a 6-0 record after outscoring opponents by a total of 58-5 during the weekend.

The three replacements for Finch, who ran out of eligibility, and Gladding, who transferred with two years remaining at UA, all had successful outings over the weekend.

Freshman Alicia Hollowell shined in the circle for the Wildcats, pitching 11 innings, allowing two hits and striking out 17 over the weekend.

Freshman Leslie Wolfe also pitched well, giving up just one hit and striking out six in the 9-0 win over New Mexico Highlands on Friday.

Junior Wendy Allen, a transfer from Ohio State, looked strong while lasting all seven innings, striking out four and giving up four hits during the 3-0 win over Central Arizona on Friday.

"I thought (Allen) pitched excellent for us, but all of the pitchers looked better than I had expected." Candrea said. "It was good to get our young players in uniform this weekend, and now we have two and a half months to raise the bar even farther."

Returning starters Mackenzie Vandergeest, Lovie Jung and Jackie Coburn led the way for the Wildcats offensively.

Vandergeest, a junior catcher from Westlake, Calif., hit grand slams on back-to-back days, the first versus New Mexico Highlands on Friday and the other against New Mexico on Saturday.

Jung, a senior who transferred from Fresno State before last season, was 4-for-4 with 3 doubles in Sunday's 10-2 victory over Cypress Community College.

Coburn, a sophomore from Phoenix, had five RBIs, including a three-run home run during the 14-0 blowout of Pima Community College in the nightcap.

Senior Lisha Rebellia also contributed in the victory over Pima, with an inside-the-park home run off the right-field wall in the first inning.

"Overall, we did a good job," said Jung following the win against Pima. "We hit well all weekend, but we need a lot of defensive work. Defense wins close games, and we need to improve our defense before the season starts."

Freshmen Samantha Quintero and Autumn Champion played well in their first action, combining for four hits against Central Arizona on Saturday. Champion also scored six runs while going 7-for-7 during action on Friday.

Head coach Mike Candrea said that team defense is definitely where UA has the largest need for improvement.

"Offensively, we looked very good at times," Candrea said. "I was still disappointed in the physical mistakes, though. We looked very young out there in the field."

This was the only game action the team will see this fall, with the spring season expected to get underway with full practices in early January.
