Students will be able to design and name new UA basketball student spirit shirts in a contest that begins Monday.
The "Name the Student Spirit Shirt" contest ÷ presented by student government, Pepsi, the Arizona Daily Wildcat and Arizona Athletics ÷ will run through Friday, ASUA Sen. Peter Wand announced at Wednesday's Senate meeting.
Beginning Monday, there will be entry forms printed in the Wildcat for students to enter the contest. Students will be able to draw designs on the forms or produce ideas and names. They also can attach a logo or graphic for consideration.
The shirts will be given away to all student season ticket holders, and students will be encouraged to wear the shirts to all games.
It will cost $17,000 to produce the 4,300 shirts, but Pepsi and Arizona Athletics contributed $14,000 to the project, reducing the cost to the Associated Students of the University of Arizona.
The winning design will be selected by a panel of judges and announced at halftime of the Pepsi Red/Blue game on Nov. 6. The panel includes student body President Doug Hartz, Wand, a Pepsi representative, a Wildcat representative, an athletics department representative and a basketball player.
The designer will receive a pair of floor-level student season tickets for both the
A and B men's basketball season and a
basketball autographed by the men's basketball team.
The initial idea for the project came up last spring during Wand's campaign.
"I am a huge U of A basketball fan and have been all my life · so I wanted to do anything I could do to increase the spirit at games," he said.
While there is no sure way to win the contest, Wand did make some suggestions.
"I would definitely recommend that (students) work it out with their friends because we're giving away two season tickets. And the more creative the better," he said.
Students should bring their entries to the ASUA offices located above the UofA Bookstore.
