Usually, when a team has three point guards, good things are going to happen with the basketball.

That was the case in the first game of Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage in front of a record-setting Family Weekend crowd of 2,600 people, the largest crowd to ever watch a UA practice.

With seniors Jason Gardner and Luke Walton and freshman Chris Rodgers all wearing blue jerseys, the team coached by assistant coach Rodney Tention scored 68 points in just 20 minutes to win 68-37 over associate head coach Jim Rosborough's white team.

"When you get that senior leadership, the other three guys on that team just play a whole lot better,'' head coach Lute Olson said. "The other team must have given up half their points on fast breaks."

Walton, who plays a point/forward position, led the way with 20 points, four assists and six rebounds, and also had the highest plus-minus score of 23 points. Gardner and freshman teammate Chris Dunn both finished with a plus-minus score of 21.

Dunn, who is still supposed to redshirt this season to gain muscle and to alleviate an overload of players who play the same forward position, played tough in the post when he was forced to cover sophomores Dennis Latimore and Isaiah Fox.

"I thought that Luke and Chris Dunn were the two best inside guys today," Olson said.

The Wildcats were without the services of three of last year's starters in sophomores Salim Stoudamire and Channing Frye and senior Rick Anderson. Stoudamire is still bothered by a sore ankle, but should return to practice today, according to Olson.

"Had this been a regular game, he could have played," said Olson about Stoudamire. "We just didn't want to take the chance."

Both Anderson, who went home because his mother will undergo a medical procedure, and Frye, who went to a family wedding, were excused by Olson for the day.

In the second game, Bynum and Gardner switched teams, and the white team, then with Walton and Bynum, won by a much closer 55-51 score.

Rodgers led the way with 18 points and scored the most points over the course of both games with 29.

"He has not had good practices to this point," said Olson about Rodgers. "This was probably one of his best."

Olson said the Wildcats will practice today through Friday. UA will hold another full scrimmage Friday at 2:30 p.m. that will probably be open, Olson said.
