Dia de los Muertos exhibit kicks off with 9/11 commemoration

Tonight at 5, join the spirited celebration of the age-old Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). This year "Two Towers: Viva Los Muertos," two three-diminesional 12-foot-high towers memorializing the events of Sept. 11, 2001, will be featured.

The reception will include entertainment by a Mariachi group and traditional Day of the Dead refreshments. The exhibit closes on Nov. 29, 2002.

It is believed the souls of ancestors return each year on Nov. 2 to enjoy, for a few brief hours, the pleasures they knew in life. In Mexico City and other large cities, the celebration is enthusiastically celebrated by displaying figures of skulls and skeletons mimicking the living.

In small towns and villages, many households place offerings of food and drink on tables arranged with flowers and candles.

The event will take place at the Ariziona Historical Society, 949 E. Second St. For more information call 628-5774.

Repertory Theatre presents Chekov's ĪThe Three Sisters'

Friday and Saturday night, the Arizona Repertory Theatre will be showing their version of Anton Chekov's "The Three Sisters." The play centers around Masha, Olga and Irina, who live in a provincial Russian town, but long for the excitement of Moscow.

The work is not focused deeply on plot, but asks audience members to examine the characters in great detail. Some critics have described it as the best play written in the 20th century.

The Arizona Repertory Theatre is the professional training company of the School of Theatre Arts at the UA.

General admission is $20, senior citizens and university employees $18, and students $14. For more information, contact the Fine Arts Box Office at 621-1162.
