In the UA basketball team's first scrimmage since being named the No. 1 team in the nation, it lost two of its top players to injuries.

However, neither senior forward Luke Walton nor sophomore shooting guard Salim Stoudamire is expected to miss much time.

Walton dislocated his pinkie on his left non-shooting hand late in the second half and Stoudamire "tweaked" his already sore left ankle early in the first half. Walton will have X-rays today as a precautionary measure, but trainer Justin Kokoskie said he doesn't expect him to miss anytime. Stoudamire is day-to-day, according to head coach Lute Olson.

"We need Salim back because of his shooting," Olson said. "He's the kind of guy that, when we push it down the court, can find an opening. The way he's shooting the ball right now can create a great deal of problems."

Guard Jason Ranne, who connected on two straight 3-pointers late in the scrimmage and had three on the day, left with less than five minutes left with a bloody nose.

In the 40-minute scrimmage, sophomore center Channing Frye had 23 points on 10-of-11 from the field and had 21 rebounds for the white team. But the white team, coached by assistant Rodney Tention, which was without both Stoudamire and Walton, lost 93-90 to associate head coach Jim Rosborough's blue team in front of 1,500 people in McKale Center.

"He had a great day," said Olson about Frye. "But the bad news is that one of our other guys was playing against him."

Senior point guard Jason Gardner had nine points, 13 assists and five steals for the blue team; but Olson said afterward that Gardner still has to be more vocal on the fast break.

"We don't want Jason to start out the offense with the ball ÷ we want the ball out to the wing," Olson said. "Jason has got to communicate with that. He needs to be the guy that's screaming for the ball. And we're not getting that from him."

But the one problem Gardner is having is that the wings are not filling the lanes and not allowing him to push the ball up-court faster.

"(Andre Iguodala and Hassan Adams) play well together, but neither one of them gets out and fills that lane consistently," Olson said. "They need to run the lanes wider and come back to get the ball. Part of that is fatigue."

Adams finished the afternoon with 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting and Iguodala poured in 25 and eight rebounds.

Rosborough was upset with the effort of two of the freshmen who struggled Friday.

"A couple of guys have done a really good job for us so far and then they were disappointing today," he said. "Chris Dunn and Chris Rodger's play was disappointing. But overall, it was a good effort."

This was the third open scrimmage for Arizona since practice started three weeks ago, and all three have had crowds with more than 1,000 people.

"I think the main thing with the crowd is that (the players) react and the adrenaline flow helps them," Olson said. "They are tired and it helps them turn it on."

This was the team's third and final scrimmage before the Wildcats take the court Wednesday night for the Pepsi Red/Blue game.
