GAINESVILLE, Fla. ÷ After threatening a woman with an ax, a Gainesville man was arrested and charged Sunday with aggravated assault.
The reason?
Because the woman turned out to be a man.
Lennon Waters, 32, swung an ax at the victim after discovering he was a man dressed as a woman, according to an arrest report. Police classified the crime as a hate crime, which could mean stiffer penalties for Waters if convicted.
The victim told officers that Waters asked him into his home at 431 NW Second St., according to the report.
Waters told police the fight began because he was defending himself from the victim, who allegedly touched Waters' penis, according to the report.
Waters reportedly picked up the ax and told the victim, "You are going to change your life before you leave here," the report stated.
During the struggle, the victim sustained injuries to his face, bite marks to his arms, scrapes on his knees and bruising to other areas of his body, according to the arrest report.
The defendant had no visible injuries.
The victim then told Gainesville Police officers at the scene that Waters made several remarks about his sexual orientation during the attack.
"I thought he was gonna kill me," the victim told police. "I'm glad that I'm still alive."
As of Monday afternoon, Waters was still booked into the Alachua County Jail with bail set at $5,000.
