The Icecats have been looking to make a statement in every game this season, and that's what they did against visiting DePaul, outscoring the Blue Demons 30-3 in a two game weekend sweep.
DePaul (3-8-1) came into the weekend overmatched from the start, as it was a late addition to the UA schedule after Buffalo pulled out of its commitment to travel to Tucson just days before the start of the season.
"We had a feeling beforehand that the games might end up this way," freshman defenseman Mike Pelletier said. "It was good though because it gave us a chance to work on certain situations, and allowed us to play our third and fourth lines more often. We were able to get everyone a lot of work."
Not only did most of the team get plenty of playing time, the goal-scoring column of the scoresheet was littered with much of the UA roster, as eleven different Icecats lit the lamp in Saturday's 16-2 drubbing, along with ten during Friday's 14-1 blowout.
It took the No. 6 Icecats over seven minutes to score during Friday's game, but after junior Braden Koprivica slipped one past the DePaul defense, it would take the next six full periods before the potent attack from the Icecats would be grounded at the final buzzer on Saturday.
Pelletier scored one goal on Friday night, along with adding two the next night, while freshman Cole Dunlop earned his first career hat trick as an Icecat during Friday's contest along with adding a goal on Saturday. Senior Matt Naylor also scored a hat trick, with his coming on Saturday night.
Junior Andrew Fredricks, senior Dave Loftus, freshman Tim Wochok, sophomore Nick Woods and sophomore Shaun Brooks each scored as well on Friday, with sophomores Eric Ormson and Don Holtz taking away with them two goals apiece. On Saturday, in the first game of his Icecat career, freshman Banks Concepcion scored two goals, while sophomore Mickey Meehan, junior Dan Whitlock, junior Wes Krisay and freshman Dylan Cerruti each scored as well. Fredricks, Loftus and Holtz rounded out the scoring on Saturday night for the Icecats.
"We used five lines this weekend, which allowed us to work on our offensive and defensive positioning," UA head coach Leo Golembiewski said. "We got a lot out of seeing all of our players skate against real opponents, instead of just each other in practice."
Not only did the skaters each receive ample playing time, but the team's corps of goaltenders did as well.
Sophomore Bryan Aronchick, the Icecats No. 1 goaltender, saw just over 30 minutes of action all weekend, playing the first period-and-a-half of Friday's victory before being pulled for freshman Casey Leyva.
It was the same story on Saturday, as Rick Karasch got the call to start for the Icecats, while being relieved midway through the second period by Junior Nik Rieser.
"I was happy with what I saw this weekend," Golembiewski said. "We have a nice meshing team here, not just on the ice either. Brian (Meehan, Icecat associate head coach) has been with me for nine years or so, and we have the same philosophical concept. We could not be happier with our organization."
