Three meets into the season, Bill Ryden has had to change his coaching philosophy to quality over quantity.
The quality will come from the remaining gymnasts that the UA gymnastics coach has left, while the lack of quantity comes from not knowing who or how many there will be.
With injuries and illness hitting his No. 13 Gymcats hard of late, and still not knowing who can compete, he will put his new way of thinking to the test tonight when his team faces Arizona State at 7:30 p.m. in McKale Center.
"They are strong everywhere," said Ryden of the No. 6 ranked Sun Devils. "Based on how they're scoring, it seems that they are running on all cylinders now. To be ranked that high you don't have a weakness."
Where and When . . .
Who: No. 6 Arizona State vs. No. 13 Arizona
When: Tonight at 7:30 p.m.

In the teams' last meeting, the Wildcats (3-1, 1-1) got the best of their in-state rivals at the South Central Regional Championships in Tempe. Arizona squeaked out a close 194.950-194.875 victory to finish second in the meet and earn a berth to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1996. Arizona's win over the Sun Devils was its first at Arizona State since 1987.
Last year the Sun Devils (4-1,1-1), like the UA team this year, battled injuries throughout the season.
Arizona has seven gymnasts that are listed as questionable for tonight's meet, forcing Ryden to make lineup decisions just hours before the meet.
"We had girls doing floor in practice that if we were 100 percent healthy wouldn't be getting near the floor," Ryden said.
One of the girls who is questionable tonight is sophomore Jamie Duce, who has been sick all week, and is not likely to compete on the floor. Duce competed in the all-around for the first time in her career last week in Seattle.
"Floor is such a demanding event physically," Ryden said. "The floor is a minute-and-a-half of solid work."
Also questionable tonight is Sheehan Lemley (ankle), Abby Pearson (sick), Jamie Schell (sick), Jessamyn Salter (sick) and Andi McCabe (ankle).
"If there is any silver-lining in this cloud, then it would be that the meet is at home," Ryden said. "If we had to get on a plane we wouldn't even know who to take."
