The Arizona men's tennis team started the season with a bang as it dominated Santa Clara last weekend, but this weekend marks the first true test of the season for the Wildcats.

UA travels to San Diego to take on the University of San Diego and San Diego State, two teams that are ranked higher in the recent Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis rankings. But the Wildcats are anxious for the opportunity to test their mettle.

The Wildcats (1-0) are ranked 62nd, and will be challenged this weekend competing against the Toreros and Aztecs, ranked 49th and 31st, respectively.

"Our guys are well-rested and ready to go," Arizona assistant coach Bob Helmig said. "We have a good week of practice and we are ready to take the road and try to defeat two teams that are ranked higher then we are."

Arizona will face off Saturday against SDSU, a team that has yet to lose a match in its first two contests of the spring season.

The Wildcats have faced the Toreros 20 times in the team's history and hold a 15-5 all-time record, including a 6-1 victory in Tucson last season.

USD and Arizona are pretty evenly matched on paper, but facing the Aztecs on Sunday will be a much bigger task that awaits the young Arizona squad.

In both matches, Helmig said the Wildcats have to come out strong and win the doubles point, something that they didn't do last weekend at home.

"The doubles point gives you momentum early," Helmig said. "When you play on the road you have to jump on your opponents early. Winning the doubles point gives you momentum heading into the singles matches."

Winning the doubles point against SDSU is going to be an uphill battle for the Wildcats, as the Aztecs' top doubles tandem is ranked sixth nationally.

SDSU's top player, Oliver Mailberger, is ranked 13th nationally and will give junior Whi Kim, who is ranked 102nd, all he can handle at the top spot. Arizona comes into its match against the Aztecs as an underdog, but they are hoping that history will be on their side as they hold a 19-3 record all-time in the dual matches against SDSU.

Kim said he felt Arizona's ranking wasn't indicative of how good they are. This weekend will give the Wildcats their first chance to make a statement that they are going to be a team to be reckoned with once the Pacific 10 Conference season begins later this month.
