Spend tuition on improving education, not financial aid

I just don't get it. Every day we hear from professors, administrators, department heads and campus leaders that there isn't enough money to support their particular program to its full capability. We as students hear that we aren't getting the full education we should be, due to lack of funds. Students can't get the classes needed to graduate because there isn't enough money to fund more class sections. Whole departments have to be merged together to save in administration costs. Columbia tragedy is important to Wildcat

An editorial decision was made Sunday evening not to run the Columbia tragedy on the front page of Monday's Arizona Daily Wildcat, and I'd like to take readers inside that decision.

We got some heat for running a photo from the "Girls Gone Wild" tour front page, and although I stand by the decision to cover the Columbia explosion like we did, it deserves some explanation.

First of all, there was never a discussion over which was more important ÷ "Girls Gone Wild" or Columbia. Hands down it was Columbia. [Read article]

photo Issue of the Week: President Likins' proposed tuition hike

On Monday, President Likins proposed implementing the largest tuition increase ever at the University of Arizona. After dealing for years with a state legislature that is consistently apathetic toward higher education, budget cuts have now crippled our university. Every student has been affected by larger and fewer classes, fewer top faculty, less out-of-classroom activities and students are still forced to dish out money for class materials. Complementing the cuts, last year UA was rated D- in money for class materials. In an attempt to inhibit a financial downward slide, Likins has proposed an approximate 40 percent tuition increase for both in-state and out-of-state students.
