Dating disasters

Oregon Daily Emerald
University of Oregon

People generally hope for the best as they head out on a date, but sometimes an evening meant for romance turns into a disaster story.

University of Oregon junior Joey Albert will never forget his dating disasters. A few years ago, Albert said he took a date to a Portland Trailblazers game at the Rose Garden. Those familiar with the arena know there is a large fountain in the courtyard that periodically spurts different water formations up from the ground, drenching anyone walking across it.

Smartest man alive

Michigan Daily
University Michigan

If the day before two days after the day before tomorrow is Monday, what day is today? This was just one of the questions that earned Andrew Nierman, a University of Michigan computer science doctoral candidate, the "World's Smartest Man Award." His feat was accomplished by winning the International High IQ Society's online test.

"I decided to take part in the test because I wanted the Smartest Person in the World plaque that was being offered as part of the prize," Nierman said.

FDA questions

Daily Illini
University of Illinois

Despite recent questioning from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration concerning the improper disposal of pig carcasses, Neal Merchen, interim head of the Department of Animal Sciences, said he doesn't think the FDA's concerns will affect University of Illinois research.

Five years ago, the University began research with strains of bovine genes in pigs to see if certain gene strains would increase milk production and digestion in their offspring.
