The UA men's volleyball team inched closer to its goal of a fifth national championship this weekend at the Mountain West Regional tournament in Las Vegas, rolling to three victories.

Senior outside hitter Turner Elliott and graduate outside hitter Alan Brown keyed Arizona's attack with strong performances throughout the tournament.

Junior opposite Britt Burridge was solid before an ankle injury sidelined him from the final day of action.

All-tournament honors will be announced later in the week.

The coaching staff said the team's performance in Las Vegas is a big positive heading into the national tournament.

The UA is hitting its stride at the right time, as the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association championship tournament is less than two weeks away.

This year's tournament will take place April 8-11 in Charlotte, N.C.

The Mountain West Regional should catapult Arizona into a top seed at the national tournament, and possibly improve the Wildcats in the NIRSA rankings.

As of March 24, Arizona was ranked third in the nation.

Women's volleyball teams gear up for national tournament

The UA women's volleyball teams set their focus on the NIRSA Championships after strong performances last weekend in Las Vegas.

Arizona's B team claimed 11th place and the A team placed 18th at the Mountain West Regional, the teams' final test before the national tournament April 8-11.

The coaching staff said the B team is a strong candidate to receive a top-three seed for the national championships. Seeds will be announced later in the week.

The performance at the Mountain West Regional could boost Arizona's standings in the NIRSA polls. The B team is ranked eighth among Division II teams.

Synchronized swim impressive in Michigan

The UA synchronized swim team continued to persevere through injuries this weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich. Arizona swam six women against 28 eight-swimmer university teams and finished ninth overall at the invitational hosted by Michigan.

Of the eight teams to finish above Arizona, seven are NCAA varsity programs.

The only club team to place higher than Arizona was Florida.

Sophomore Kirstin Schnepp won a bronze medal in the individual "C" figure routine, while teammates Cori Geier and Katie Christiansen placed fourth and ninth, respectively.

The performance was great overall for the entire team and a positive before senior nationals, head coach Jill Ranucci said.
