Men's tennis splits on Northwest swing

The Arizona men's tennis team finally got its first Pac-10 win of the season, but still ended the weekend on a sour note.

The Wildcats (12-7, 1-4 Pacific 10 Conference) beat Oregon 5-2 on the road Friday to carry its winning streak to four, but fell 6-1 yesterday at Washington.

The depth in the lineup was the key to the win over Oregon, as the Wildcats' two top singles players and top doubles team lost. However, no one else in the lineup had a close match as the middle and bottom of the lineup took apart the Ducks.

"Oregon has a really good one and two punch," senior Tom Lloyd said.

In doubles competition, sophomore Roger Matalonga and junior Colin O'Grady went down 8-6 to UO's Sven Swinnen and Aaron Spencer. On court two, senior Whi Kim and sophomore Daniel Andrus held off the Duck tandem of Thomas Bieri and Manuel Kost 8-5; and on court three, junior Paul Warkentin and sophomore Tim Mullane won 8-2 to earn the doubles point.

"We've been winning the doubles point," Lloyd said. "That's where we find our success."

In singles, Matalonga and Kim, playing on courts one and two, respectively, lost their matches to higher-ranked opponents. On court three, Colin O'Grady defeated Bieri 6-3, 6-4, while Lloyd beat Markus Schiller 7-6, 6-3. Andrus won his match 6-3, 6-0 over Spencer, and his brother-in-law Warkentin took care of business on court six, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Vlad Pino.

The Washington match didn't go as well as the team had hoped, and Arizona was forced to battle tough weather conditions on the road.

"The Huskies were just too good today," Lloyd said. "It was a tough school to play in this weather and on their courts."

The Wildcats failed to win the doubles point, which has been the staple of success during their four-game winning streak, against Washington.

"If we had won the doubles point, it would have been a different ball game," Lloyd said.
