photo Softball heads to Tempe for two-game set

The Arizona softball team travels to Arizona State for an Easter weekend two-game tilt with the Sun Devils and its second and third true road games of the year.

The No. 1 Wildcats (38-1, 2-0 Pacific 10 Conference) will face ASU (30-16, 0-2) in Tempe today and tomorrow at 7 p.m.

The Sun Devils are tied for last in the league with No. 2 UCLA, which the UA swept last weekend.

"The rivalry's just like any other Pac-10 game ÷ anytime you hook up schools like Arizona and Arizona State, there's a little bit of that extra interschool rivalry," UA acting head coach Larry Ray said. "We obviously are going to approach this just like we do any other game and not put any more emphasis on it. [Read article]

photo Lame for a Game: Game anything but ĪLame'

It began looking like a hard-nosed battle for hardwood supremacy.

It ended up resembling a circus more than a basketball game.

From slam-dunk showcasing to half-court shots worth 10 points, from squirt guns to silly string, last night's annual tilt between the Wildcat hoops squads and the Arizona Wildchair wheelchair basketball team simply had it all.

"I love it," said UA men's basketball sophomore forward Hassan Adams, trying to catch his breath after escaping flying buckets of water from a post-game water fight in the middle of Lute and Bobbi Olson court. "It was fun, man; just so much fun." [Read article]

Iguodala's future still undecided

UA men's basketball sophomore forward Andre Iguodala is still unsure whether he will return to the Wildcats' next season ÷ even if his new pair of red and white Nike Air Huarache basketball shoes stay in Tucson.

Iguodala was asked if he's made a decision to declare for the NBA draft or return to the UA squad next fall, following his participation in last night's Lame for a Game event in McKale Center. [Read article]

photo Baseball: Bruins overcome Brown, Wildcats in top of 9th

Junior first baseman Jordan Brown, who went 4-for-5 and collected six RBIs and his first two homeruns of the year last night, said there was no way he'd be able to sleep.

Too bad for the Arizona baseball team that it's not because of his stellar night at the plate.

After coming back from a four-run deficit early in the game, Arizona blew a ninth-inning lead to lose 9-7 to UCLA in the first of a three-game series last night at Sancet Field. [Read article]

Bay Area schools to face men's tennis in Tucson

The Arizona men's tennis team comes home to welcome California and Stanford today and tomorrow, respectively.

After having their four-game winning streak snapped last weekend at Washington, the Wildcats (12-7, 1-3 Pacific 10 Conference) look to start a new streak against a Cal team they defeated earlier in the season. They also seek to improve their home winning streak to four.

"Hopefully we can finish the home stand with a bang," senior captain Tom Lloyd said. "It would be nice to squeeze two wins out this weekend." [Read article]

Women's tennis seeks revenge against Stanford, California

Coming off a dominating win against Washington State, the Arizona women's tennis team will try to take that momentum to the Bay Area, where they face Stanford today and California tomorrow.

Winning in northern California won't be an easy task, as No. 1 Stanford has yet to lose a match this season. Cal is tough as well, earning a No. 11 ranking.

The No. 37 Wildcats (5-10, 1-4) lost earlier this season to the Cardinal 6-1 and have only defeated Stanford once all-time. [Read article]

Track gears up for 1st trip

The Arizona track and field teams are prepared for yet another busy weekend as they face off in their first two away meets of the outdoor season.

Today, a handful of Wildcats will compete in the Mesa Classic, hosted by Mesa Community College, in hopes of earning postseason qualifying marks. The competition will include Arizona State and several community college teams.

The majority of the Arizona athletes will spend today and tomorrow contending in the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational in Westwood, Calif. The UCLA-hosted event will include five men's and six women's collegiate squads. The men's field includes CS Los Angeles, CS Northridge, UCLA and Utah State. The women will do battle against the same schools, plus UNLV. [Read article]

Diamond Notes: Lost game could loom large for UA softball

The Pac-10 may be the Conference of Champions ÷ particularly in softball ÷ but the conference has a funny habit of crowning what could be the wrong champions.

No. 7 Washington (26-7, 2-0 Pacific 10 Conference) handed No. 1 Arizona (38-1, 2-0) its lone loss to an NCAA team this year, but could take something more valuable. The Wildcats had their home game with the Huskies rained out over the weekend and, at the end of the conference season, must travel to Seattle for a doubleheader to make up the game. [Read article]
