Junior gymnast named second-team All-American

Arizona junior Monica Bisordi earned second-team All-America honors on floor, finishing fifth with a score of 9.900 in the afternoon session of the 2004 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships yesterday in UCLA's Pauley Pavilion.

Bisordi, a San Mateo, Calif., native, earned All-America honors for the first time in her career and becomes the 15th Arizona gymnast in school history to garner All-America accolades. Bisordi also posted marks of 9.850 on vault, 9.750 on bars and 9.725 on beam, to finish with an all-around score of 39.225 in the meet.

Bisordi failed to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships Saturday on floor by only 0.025 of a point.

"Monica certainly increased her status as one of the best gymnasts in the country," said head coach Bill Ryden. "Her performance on floor was probably her best floor routine of the year. At this level of a meet, that is a very high score."

Bisordi earned a trip to the 2004 NCAA Championships as an individual competitor by finishing fourth in the all-around with a score of 39.450 at the 2004 South Central Regional Championships

Bisordi finishes the season with 14 total individual event titles, and a team-high 43 top-five finishes. She posted scores of 39 points or better in the last eight meets. She also earned first-team All-Pac-10 Team honors in the all-around this season.

Also representing Arizona as an individual competitor at the NCAA Championships was senior Andi McCabe. McCabe performed on floor, finishing with a score of 9.675. She qualified for the 2004 NCAA Championships by earning a share of the floor title with a score of 9.900 at the 2004 South Central Regional Championships.

"Both Andi and Monica performed very well today," Ryden said. "I'm very proud of both Andi and Monica for their performances today, and for their hard work throughout the season to get to this point."
