Holocaust memorials 'just a hollow shell'

Thursday's memorial for the Holocaust left me feeling disgusted. Though what happened is the worst single action to have ever occurred in light of history, it is absurd to see that every year the Jewish community creates large memorials and sit-ins regarding this tragedy while at the same time their peers advocate the relocation and murdering of another people. photo A Gadfly in training: Smoke if you got 'em

I don't normally do this, but I've been smoking like a chimney for the past week. From chomping away at fat, Groucho Marx-worthy stogies to taking drags on cigarettes bummed from friends, I've been puffing away to my heart's content and my lungs' horror.

It does seem ridiculous that people still smoke in this day and age, after being exposed to all the research and information warning about the hazards of smoking; the graphic pictures of the ravaged innards of some poor, long-gone tobacco fiend; and the ubiquitous public service announcements with those beyond obnoxious, supposedly trendy hipster kids with the complicated shoes terrorizing unsuspecting citizens with a variety of highly public and at times annoying stunts. The raucous caucus: Not such a good idea after all

On Thursday, the Arizona Board of Regents will decide if we should have to pay more money to get an education here at the UA. They will take a vote on whether particular departments can raise or make a new fee for certain classes and particular majors. In essence, this is a tuition raise for the students in those classes. If the regents vote yes, they will be footing the higher bill or they will be going home. [Read article]

The Bush administration has already threatened to veto the Security and Freedom Ensured Act. The act has not even been debated in a congressional committee to date, yet the administration is already unwilling to accept this reform.

The SAFE act must be debated in an appropriate manner. If Congress can debate the act above election year politics, the bipartisan support the act commands will prove to the president that the SAFE Act is a far better choice than renewing the PATRIOT Act. [Read article]
